How long have you been in your industry?35 years
Why did you choose your industry?I'm a storyteller by nature and am comfortable telling my story or yours and in front of a crowd of thousands or across the dinner table with just a few friends. I've never felt like I am working with the microphone in my hand.
Who are your typical clients?Business owners who want to inspire and motivate their employees, or who want their story told in an endorsement/advertisement. Non-profits who need an emcee or celebrity auctioneer for the gala or event.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I once had the opportunity to talk with the great Charles Kuralt of 60 Minutes who advised me that absolutely everyone has a story, everyone. If you just ask you're likely to uncover one that deserves telling and I thrive on finding those stories and then sharing them. I've told a lot of football stories over the years and the stories of players, coaches and their journey to the mountaintop of professional sports. I plan on telling a lot of new and different stories in the years to come.
What are common problems you see? We've reached a point in the media world where traditional news and long form story telling has been replaced by social media and 140 characters. It's so difficult to really explore people and ideas when folks attention spans have been programmed to headlines and quick Tweets that don't even scratch the surface of a story.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Look for credible people with a strong brand in your marketplace to share your story and then make their efforts more fruitful by giving them the information that will draw people to you and your business.
When is your busy season?Late July through the end of the NFL season...hoping that's in February but it's not yet been the case in Jacksonville.
What keeps you up at night? The media world is so divided these days and everyone has an agenda. It's tough to be an independent minded broadcaster when everyone expects you to not only have a bias but lean into it.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?I have mostly used word of mouth as I build my speaking business and existing relationships. My goal in the future is to use social media to distribute key elements of my speaking engagements.
How involved are you in the community?I've long been associated with Troop 15 in Atlantic Beach and the North Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America. I've also become heavily involved in the Emergency Assistance Ministry at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where we help with things like rent and utilities and also distribute food on a weekly and monthly basis.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity? The Women's Help Center and the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation are both near and dear to my heart. Both work tirelessly helping parents and children.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Make sure you have a business degree or background. The internet and social media has radically lowered the barriers to entry into the media world. The bad news is that it is so diluted that no one wants to pay you but the good news is that if you have a great idea and the business sense to monetize it you can create a thriving business.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I love to kayak, play tennis, work with my smoker on all kinds of backyard barbecue and am planning a trip to Spain for the Camino de Santiago.
